Fusion Of Indian And French Influences Creates A Unique And Glamorous Aesthetic For Fashionistas
The fusion of Indian and French influences has given birth to a unique and glamorous aesthetic that celebrates the rich heritage of both countries.

The fusion of Indian and French influences has created a truly unique and glamorous aesthetic. This fascinating blend traces its roots back to the era following Queen Victoria’s coronation as Empress of India, when British lords encouraged Indian Maharajas to explore the world and immerse themselves in the art, culture, and aesthetic of different countries. This endeavour to shape the Indian mind led to the emergence of the ‘Indo-French style,’ as Indian rulers incorporated elements of French design into the existing Indian art, culture, and aesthetic.

Maayankraj Singh, Founder & Head Designer, Atelier Shikaarbagh, says, “For Atelier Shikaarbagh, these remnants of the imperial past have played a significant role in shaping the brand’s trademark identity, setting it apart from others in the industry. Rather than overwhelming embellishments, Atelier Shikaarbagh focuses on tasteful placement, drawing inspiration from the couture popularised by French fashion in the 1950s and 1960s.”

The Indian aesthetic is a celebration of life, characterised by vibrant jewel tones, luxurious fabrics, rich embellishments, and traditional silhouettes. On the other hand, the French aesthetic exudes opulence with a restrained touch, featuring a soft and delicate colour palette reminiscent of a rainbow reflected on sea foam. “The fusion of these two aesthetics has given rise to a style that beautifully honours the heritage of both countries. The best example of this amalgamation would be “Lalitya “ saree which borrows its inspiration from French chinoiserie motifs and Indian colour palette . The effect resembles that of the Tutti frutti creations of Cartier and van Cleef & Arpels. All in all, the marriage between France and India has succeeded in creating a style which is not only trendy but remains placed in history with prominence,” adds Singh.
