Dogs have consistently proven to be mankind’s faithful companions, a truth exemplified in the story of a poor man residing on the streets of Lucknow. Amidst the solitude that enveloped him, this impoverished soul found solace in a street dog, whom he could refer to as ‘his.’ This heartening connection came to light after filmmaker and author Vinod Kapri, observed the man diligently collecting waste in the wee hours of the night with a devoted canine companion faithfully following him. Intrigued, Kapri documented the scene, sharing the poignant story on the micro-blogging site ‘X,’ captivating the internet audience.
In a 7-minute video, the director of ‘Can’t Take This Shit Anymore’ expressed his astonishment at the dog faithfully shadowing the man as he gathered waste from the streets at approximately 3 a.m. The footage showcased the same, while Kapri recounted the incident in the caption, stating, “Returning from a wedding, we stopped for tea at Shahmina Road. Right in front of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Centre. Suddenly I saw that a man was collecting garbage and a dog was constantly with him. Continuous means continuously. Kept watching for 5-7 minutes.”

Motivated by curiosity, Kapri decided to document the duo’s journey, observing how long the man and his loyal canine companion would traverse the streets together. To everyone’s surprise, the companionship endured for more than six minutes, prompting Kapri to initiate a conversation with the destitute man. After providing him with some money, Kapri, accompanied by acquaintances in the car, engaged in a conversation with the man, identified as Mohammad Shakeel.
When questioned about the dog, Shakeel revealed, “He lives with me, eats with me, sleeps with me.” Residing on a footpath, Shakeel had no one but this devoted dog in his life.
Recounting the enduring bond, Shakeel, referring to the dog as Kallu, shared endearing anecdotes, including how they shared a blanket during sleep, with Kallu even acting as Shakeel’s alarm clock.

Meanwhile, closing the viral post, Kapri disclosed, “When we talked to Shakeel, we came to know that he belonged to a landlord family of Bahraich but his father evicted him and his brothers after his second marriage. Since then he has been on the footpath. There is no news of any brother. Only Kallu is with him and Shakeel hopes for justice from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.”
