Actor Ajith Kumar and his wife Shalini Ajith are known to be a power couple in the Tamil film industry. Their love story rivals that of any romantic film, with both of them falling in love during the making of the 1999 film Amarkalam. It was Shalini’s second movie and Ajith had just broken up with actress Heera Rajagopal.
While filming Amarkalam, directed by Saran, Ajith found newfound love and started dating Shalini. Their relationship made for an interesting gossip column in tabloids at that time. In June 1999, Ajith proposed to actress Shalini, and they got married in April 2000 in Chennai, despite actor Ramesh Khanna’s advice to Ajith not to marry an actress.
Shooting for Amarkalam, where the couple’s love blossomed, is filled with stories regarding the two. One of them was recently shared by singer cum music composer Ramani Bharadwaj who had scored music for the film. The famous song from the movie Unnodu Vaazha became a huge hit among youngsters in that period and was the new age love anthem.
Bharadwaj said that Ajith wrote a letter to Shalini, incorporating lyrics from the song Unnodu Vazha. It was a gift from the actor to his ladylove and a subtle way of confessing his love. Ajith Kumar asked music director Bharadwaj if he could record the entire song that would appear in the movie for the scene involving Shalini and Ajith’s wedding.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Amarkalam turned out to be a big success. A digitally restored version of Amarkalam was released on May 16, 2014.
Ajith Kumar last appeared in 2023’s Pongal release Thunivu, facing off against Vijay’s Varisu. The actor’s next project is the lead part in the movie Vidaa Muyarchi, which also stars Trisha Krishnan, Arjun Sarja, Regina Cassandra and Bigg Boss Tamil star Arav. Magizh Thirumeni is directing the action thriller, and Anirudh Ravichander is handling the music. Filming for the movie was put on a halt last month as Ajith had to undergo surgery.
