White House Official Regrets Past Posts After Fresh Promotion Draws Social Media Ire
Cherry, who had been working at the Interior Department for Secretary Deb Haaland, took charge as the Associate Communications Director at the White House

The newly appointed White House communications official on Sunday apologised for contentious social media posts from his past, saying earlier posts do not reflect his current views.

Tyler Cherry, former White House Interior Communications Director known for controversial remarks, has been promoted to Associate Communications Director in the Biden administration. Cherry’s apology came after his past comments on the Republican Party, US law enforcement agencies, and Gaza went viral.

“Past social media posts from when I was younger do not reflect my current views. Period. I support this Administration’s agenda – and will continue my communications work focused on our climate and environmental policies,” Cherry said in a post on Sunday. The newly appointed official earlier worked at the Interior Department for Secretary Deb Haaland.

In a 2015 post shared by social media users on X, Cherry compared American law enforcement to ‘slave patrols’. “Praying for #Baltimore, but praying even harder for an end to a capitalistic police state motivated by explicit and implicit racial biases,” he wrote in a 2015 post on the killing of a Black man in Baltimore police custody. “Apt time to recall that the modern-day police system is a direct evolution of slave patrols and lynch mobs,” he said in a subsequent post.

While some users described Cherry as a ‘far-left extremist,’ others asked, ‘Could you elaborate on what views are different and which of these past posts do not reflect your current views?’ It is important to note that the controversial posts from Cherry’s past are no longer visible on his current X account.

Any posts on his account before April 2022 seem to have been deleted, preventing independent verification of circulating screenshots. The handle @TylerACherry seen in the screenshots corresponds to Cherry’s current X account name.
