Mumbai is all set to get its first pod taxi service for the bustling business hub of Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the project, which was first proposed in March by the state government.
According to TOI, the new route will connect Bandra and Kurla railway stations through BKC, aiming to cut down travel time from 45 minutes to a swift, congestion-free ride.
The contract has been awarded to Sai Green Mobility, teaming up with Ultra PRT, the same company that brought pod taxis to London’s Heathrow Airport. With upcoming projects like the bullet train and new commercial developments, MMRDA sees the pod taxis as the perfect solution for last-mile connectivity in this high-traffic area.
A detailed study by Tata Consulting Engineers found that pod taxis are the best option for BKC, considering the area’s layout and expected growth. MMRDA Chairman and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the system will set the standard for urban transport across India, boosting sustainable and efficient mobility.
The project, approved in MMRDA’s 156th authority meeting, will cost an estimated Rs 1,016 crore and will be completed in three years. It will operate under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with a 30-year concession period including revenue-sharing with MMRDA.
