New Delhi: The tug-of-war between Ambani brothers over the gas dispute seems to be getting bigger by the day.
In a setback for Anil Ambani, the Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain his company RNRL's plea for commencing final hearing on gas dispute from September 1.
The apex court said it will decide on final hearing date on September 1.
On Wednesday, the Government counsel in the case said that the Government supported early hearing of RIL-RNRL case.
“We have made a joint request, the honourable court can the hear the matter from September 1. The court has also appreciated the urgency of the matter and has observed that they will try hear it as early as possible and kept the date on September 1. On that day itself they'll consider to hear it or to fix another date for hearing,” RNRL counsel Mahesh Agarwal said.
On Wednesday, Anil reacted to the development, welcoming the Government's move and also hoped Mukesh's Reliance Industries will not engage in “dilatory tactics” adding that resolving the dispute was necessary for creating new power capacities.
The Ambani brothers gas dispute also echoed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday with some members demanding the resignation of Petroleum Minister Murli Deora and even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing concern over Anil’s allegations about the oil ministry.
"I will be personally happy to be proven wrong if RIL also agrees to our request, if it genuinely wants to resolve the issue expeditiously. Since the Petroleum Ministry has reiterated on several occasions that the matter is of national importance, RNRL will request them to support and not get mislead and misguided by RIL who we believe only wants to delay the matter probably indefinitely,” he said.
Earlier, a no-holds barred attack, Anil Ambani landed an emotional punch on elder brother, saying Mukesh no longer saw a role for their mother Kokilaben in resolving their gas dispute and has traded Dhirubhai's vision for "corporate greed."
Asserting that he had made sincere efforts at every stage to amicably resolve all issues, but without success, Anil said, "unfortunately, in the pursuit of corporate greed, RIL has even forgotten the vision of the founder chairman (late Dhirubhai Ambani)!"
"My respected elder brother has already made it amply clear both within the family and externally that he does not visualise any further role for my respected mother in resolving this (gas supply dispute) or any other matter."
It was Kokilaben who oversaw the division of the Reliance empire in 2005, two years after the differences between the two brothers became public.
Asked if he could consider an alternative to legal dispute or an out-of-court settlement, Anil said: "I have at
every stage made sincere efforts to amicably resolve all issues but to no avail”.
RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani refused to be drawn into a public quarrel with his younger brother.
"We do not wish to comment on baseless, malicious and wrong accusations," said a spokesperson for Mukesh Ambani, when asked about Anil's statement that his elder brother did not visualise any role for mother Kokilaben in settling disputes.
