The Andhra Pradesh government aims to build a model state that can become an economic power house for the entire nation.

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday announced Vijayawada as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The announcement was made in the state Assembly amidst protests by opposition YSR Congress demanding a discussion over the issue.

The centrally located Vijayawada region will be the capital for the newly bifurcated state of Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu also announced plans to decentralise development of the state in all districts with three mega cities and 14 smart cities.

But opposition YSR Congress protested, demanding a discussion on the Sivaramakrishnan Committee report on the location of the new state capital. The committee had opposed making the Vijayawada region the capital - citing economic and environmental concerns.

However, in his declaration, Naidu said that air, rail and road connectivity will be in all regions to make the state a logistics hub. The intention to expand Vijayawada and Tirupati airports into international ones was also expressed as well as food parks in every district.

The government also declared a land pooling system to consolidate land required for the capital.
