Barnala: A debt-ridden farmer and his mother committed suicide after they were unable to repay a loan.
Farmer Baljeet Singh (30) and his mother Balveer Kaur (60) had taken a loan of Rs 3 lakh from a commission agent by mortgaging their two acres of land, police said, adding an old case was going on between the two over the land.
Police along with district administration officials had gone to Jodhpur village to take possession of the land on the directive of a court, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Toor said.
As they proceeded to his land, the duo along with other villagers resisted and sought more time to repay the money, police said.
The mother and son later allegedly consumed disinfectant and ended their lives, sources said. Police said a case has been registered and the bodies have been sent for postmortem.
Reacting to this, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said, "I dont know what was the raeson but we are helping those in need. Government can't bring the water level up all of a sudden."
