Asha Parekh has opened up about her marriage rumours with Shammi Kapoor. The two worked together in several films including Teesri Manzil, Dil Deke Dekho and Pagla Kahin Ka among others. However, Shammi Kapoor once lied that he is married to Asha which left everyone confused. Years after, the veteran actress has now revealed that it was a prank which had left Shammi’s then-girlfriend also upset.
“This is a long story. We were shooting in Mahabaleshwar and I don’t know what Om Prakash ji thought when he said, ‘These two are married’. Then there was a part at Mr Nasir Hussain’s place. Everyone was talking and everybody started whispering, ‘They are married’. Devyani ji (renowned journalist) was also there. She heard it. She asked, ‘You are married?’ I did not know this was happening,” Asha Parekh told Arbaaz Khan during a recent interview while recalling the incident.
“Shammi ji asked me not to say anything. I told him okay. He was playing a prank. My father left. Everyone saw that and asked why I had left. He then said that my mother was in shock and so I went home. That time he (Shammi Kapoor) was having an affair with somebody. That person got very upset,” the actress added.
Asha Parekh started her acting career at the age of 10 with the 1952 film Aasmaan. She rose to fame after she played the female lead in Nasir Hussain’s 1959 movie Dil Deke Dekho, opposite Shammi Kapoor.
Asha Parekh went on to star in several films before she emerged as a producer and director. As a producer, she worked on the TV shows Jyoti and Palaash Ke Phool. She went on to direct Dal Mein Kala Hain, Kora Kagaz and Kangan. Meanwhile, Shammi continued to act in more films before he took a break from the big screen. He was last seen in Tamasha, which released in 2011. Unfortunately, it was the same year that he passed away.
