In a shocking incident, a major fire broke out at the Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre in Kolhapur, Mumbai on Thursday night, causing extensive damage to the property. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. Built in 1915 by Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the historic theatre was named after legendary theatre artist Keshavrao Bhosale and incidentally, it was gutted on the eve of Bhosale’s 134 birth anniversary. The incident has sent shock waves in the Mumbai theatre industry. Reacting to it, Marathi actress Sonali Patil posted a video on Instagram. In the clip, she is seen crying profusely after seeing the Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre burnt down.
“I have come to Kolhapur today. This is a very bad day for the people of Kolhapur. It’s a bad day for the entire theatre. Keshavrao Bhosle Theater has been completely burnt down. I don’t even want to see it. The stage on which we stood, where we experimented with drama, our home, our glory, has been burnt to ashes. I don’t know how it will stand when it stands again,” she said in the clip.
As soon as she dropped the emotional clip, the comment section was flooded with reactions from fans and celebs alike. Bigg Boss Marathi 3 fame Meenal Shah commented, “Sorry to hear this…don’t cry Shona, can’t see you like this…stay strong.” An Instagram user wrote, “Sorry to hear about this.” One user commented, “Very bad news.”
Reportedly, the theatre caught fire due to a short circuit.
As it was Sangeet Surya Keshavrao Bhosale’s birthday on Friday, the authority had organised various events to celebrate the occasion, including an exhibition of his old pictures, which eventually got destroyed in the massive fire.
Earlier, Mohan Suryawanshi, the public relations officer (PRO) of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation said, “All seven fire tenders have been deployed with all fire department personnel to control the massive blaze. As per preliminary information, the air condition unit of the theatre caught fire. What sparked the fire is yet to be ascertained,” quoted a media report.
Several pictures and videos of the massive fire that broke out at the theatre have surfaced on social media.
